In a landmark decision, the Centre on Thursday decided to take out several areas of Assam, Manipur and Nagaland from the purview of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) that is often blamed for excesses against the people of northeast in view of unfettered powers of search and arrest as well as immunity from criminal prosecution it gives to the armed forces.
